Flight control boards are the central processing units of multirotors, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and experimental UAVs, enabling both manual and autonomous flight. This category includes processor boards that support open-source and commercial flight stacks such as ArduPilot, PX4, Betaflight, and INAV. You'll find STM32-based controllers from the F4, F7, and H7 families, as well as popular platforms like Pixhawk Cube Orange, Pixracer, Kakute, and Mamba series.
Key Selection Criteria
- Firmware compatibility: Verify whether the board works with Betaflight (racing/freestyle), ArduPilot (mapped autonomy), or PX4 (industrial).
- Sensor suite: The number and type of built-in IMUs (e.g., ICM-42688, BMI270), along with barometer and magnetometer integration, directly affect stability.
- I/O capacity: Count of UART, I2C, CAN, and SBUS ports must cover your needs for GPS, telemetry, OSD, LED drivers, etc.
- Voltage and current protection: A wide input range (2S–8S), quality BEC, and integrated current sensor improve reliability.
- Form factor: 20x20mm, 30.5x30.5mm, or custom mounting patterns determine frame compatibility; AIO (all-in-one) boards are often preferred for micro quads and cinewhoops.
Most flight controllers support DShot protocols and fast PID loops through BLHeli_32/Bluejay-compatible ESCs, allowing precise motor control. Models that feature blackbox logging accelerate post-flight tuning by enabling log analysis. The choice of board should be driven by the vehicle type (racing drone, long-range FPV, agricultural spraying UAV, etc.) and payload requirements.
