Distance & Proximity Sensors
30 productsDistance and proximity sensors detect either the exact distance to an object or the presence of an object within a certain range. They are essential in robotics for collision avoidance, in automation lines for part detection, in liquid tanks for level monitoring, and in parking assistance systems. This category covers various technologies including ultrasonic, infrared (IR), laser time-of-flight (ToF), and inductive/capacitive proximity sensors.
Selection by Sensor Technology
- Ultrasonic Sensors: Measure pulse echo time. Models like HC‑SR04 offer 2‑400 cm range, perform fairly well outdoors, but may falsely read soft or sound-absorbing surfaces.
- Infrared Distance Sensors: Use IR triangulation. Sharp GP2Y0A series provides non-linear analog output over 10‑150 cm. They can be affected by dust, ambient light, and dark colored targets may reduce effective range.
- Laser ToF Sensors: Time‑of‑Flight sensors measure laser pulse travel time with millimeter accuracy. Compact I²C models such as VL53L0X/VL53L1X achieve up to 4 m range and are preferred in robotics and drones.
- Inductive/Capacitive Proximity Sensors: Inductive types detect metals, capacitive types sense any material (liquids, plastic, wood). They work at short distances (1‑20 mm) and are common in industrial automation.
Key considerations when selecting a sensor include required min‑max distance, target surface color and roughness, environmental conditions like dust or ambient light, update rate, and output interface (analog, digital, I²C, UART). Ultrasonic sensors’ beam angle (conical detection area) may cause false triggers in tight spaces; laser ToF or IR sensors often perform better there. Power supply voltage and current consumption are critical for battery-operated projects. Use the filters in our catalog to quickly match your requirements.
