MOSFET Boards

MOSFET boards are practical power switching modules designed to control high-current loads using low-power outputs from microcontrollers or development boards. Typically built around N-channel power MOSFETs, these boards allow a 5V or 3.3V logic-level signal to drive loads such as motors, LED strips, solenoids, heaters, or lamps operating at higher voltages like 12V or 24V. Integrated protection diodes and gate resistors provide robustness against wiring mistakes and inductive kickback.

Key Parameters and Selection

When choosing a MOSFET board, the most critical parameters are drain-source voltage (V_DS), continuous current capability (I_D), and gate threshold voltage (V_GS(th)). For platforms like Arduino or ESP32 that output 3.3V or 5V, a “logic level” MOSFET is essential. For instance, the IRLZ44N can fully turn on at just 3.3V thanks to its low V_GS, whereas a standard IRFZ44N may not perform adequately at that voltage. If the load is inductive (motors, relay coils), ensure the module includes a flyback diode or add an external one to protect the circuit.

Common Module Types

• Single-channel MOSFET modules: Often buffered with a transistor to step up a 5V logic signal to higher gate voltage.
• Multi-channel relay alternatives: Available in 2, 4, or 8 channels, offering silent, fast switching and proportional control via PWM, unlike mechanical relays.
• PWM dimmer boards: Designed for LED strip control, where frequency response and linearity matter.

Physical attributes such as terminal type (screw terminals, pin headers), cooling (passive aluminum heatsink, active fan), and size also matter, especially in compact industrial enclosures. Use cases span from hobby prototyping and home automation (silent switching instead of relays) to robotics motor speed control.
