What Are Bluetooth Modules?
Bluetooth modules are integrated circuits that use short-range radio frequency (2.4 GHz) for wireless data transmission. They can be easily integrated into microcontroller-based projects to establish wireless serial communication (UART). There are two main protocol branches: Classic Bluetooth and Low Energy (BLE). Options like HC-05, HC-06, HM-10, CC2541, nRF52840, and ESP32 offer different range, power consumption, and data rates to suit your project requirements.
When choosing a module, evaluate criteria such as operating voltage (typically 3.3V with 5V tolerance), antenna type (chip antenna, PCB trace, or external antenna), maximum baud rate, and BLE support. Master/slave configuration, AT command support, and encryption features also become important depending on the application. Keep in mind that metal surfaces and flammable gas sensors can cause signal attenuation.
Bluetooth modules are used in many fields including wireless sensor networks, robot control, home automation, healthcare trackers, and IoT nodes. BLE modules, in particular, are ideal for battery-powered projects thanks to their low power consumption.
